Why Give to the Church

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust[a] consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust[b] consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  Matthew 6:19-21

Certainly the church is dependent on your offering in order to function. In fact, 93% of our income comes from your offering. But, that's not the primary reason why we give. We give as an act of faith. In a society where money is greatly valued, giving some of it back to God is a concrete way to affirm our trust in God's provision. Jesus talked about money a lot. Perhaps that's because we have always had a hard time truly trusting in God, preferring to trust in our own abilities instead. That doesn't mean we should feel bad about making money - just that we shouldn't hold onto it so tightly that we place our financial resources above God.

God divided the hand into fingers so that money would slip through.
